Eric Chuah: A Journey of Compassion and Impact

Growing up in Ipoh, Malaysia, Eric Chuah was influenced by his mother's unwavering kindness towards people with disabilities, despite societal norms.

Her words, "No one ever wants to be born with a disability and to be excluded from society. We must do what we can to show kindness and help those who are less fortunate than ourselves," became Eric’s guiding principle.

This ethos led to the creation of The Cookie Project, a certified social enterprise dedicated to employing people with disabilities to make cookies that spark joy.

Eric's journey to social entrepreneurship began after a 15-year career in banking. Seeking a greater purpose, he left his job in 2017 and attended the Social Enterprise World Forum in Christchurch.

Inspired and motivated, he began sharing his vision through public speaking. A pivotal moment came when he tasted homemade butter cookies from a kind-hearted man who had adopted children with disabilities.

This encounter inspired Eric to create The Cookie Project, focusing on using the best ingredients and ensuring high quality.

The Cookie Project launched in June 2018 and quickly gained traction, selling over 5,000 cookies in the first two weeks. Despite initial skepticism, The Cookie Project thrived. In just 3 years, they employed over 36 bakers with disabilities, creating over 4,000 meaningful employment, secured 6 national contracts valued at 7 figures annually, and earned 15 awards, including the prestigious 2019 Attitude ACC Employer Award.
